Where Rainbows Meet

Where Rainbows Meet.

Projects Abroad place volunteers in the Townships in Cape Town. They are involved in a number of projects, including child daycare giving early childhood development to pre-school children.

Group projects can also involve volunteer building work.

Where Rainbows Meet.

I visited this wonderful organisation when I was teaching in Cape Town. The projects team work with WRM in a law and human rights project which offers legal and welfare rights advice in the Vrygrond township.

The international development project helps women to gain confidence and gives support with social issues.

Where Rainbows Meet is a community based organisation that deals with many problems within the area arising from poverty. Working with vulnerable and disadvantaged groups, WRM provides a number of programs offering support, including computer literacy and small business development.

Their social support with domestic problems and substance abuse is of particular benefit in the township and they are trying to raise funds to open a women’s refuge to support vulnerable families.

I met the Director, Mymoena, who told me about the challenges they faced every day. On one morning, they found a nine year old boy sleeping outside. They gave him clean clothes and emotional support to help him to attend school. When they contacted the authorities, WRM were told that the boy was known to them.

Mymoena is often asked to help women who are victims of domestic abuse. She knows how difficult life is in the township with the availability of alcohol and drugs. The gang culture is also an issue. One ray of hope has been seen during the recent pandemic. The gangs have delivered food and medicine to people in need. This shows that even gangs can reach out to others with African ‘ubuntu’ caring about the community they live in.

Perhaps the rainbows do meet after all!
